Summer enclosures

Summer enclosures

You must have witnessed these scenes when watching natural history programmes on TV: vast herds of wildebeest, antelopes, zebras and other hoofed creatures roaming the savannah, gathering near watering holes and crossing rivers. Well, to reproduce these at the zoo, it would unfortunately be necessary to extend the grounds all the way around Hradec Králové. In any case, try to imagine this when wandering past the zoo's summer enclosures. The herds of large mammals (antelopes, zebras, bonteboks, and camels) can be seen here enjoying the company of birds like African storks, pelicans and cranes.

A brief history

The first of the summer enclosures, the Large African Enclosure, was set up in the early 1970s. The Hillock was finished in 1985, more than a decade later. In 1989, the first animals took up residence in the Panoramic Enclosure. Last but not least, the North African Enclosure, was finished in the early '90s. From the very beginning, it was home to hoofed mammals from other countries, mainly South Africa.
