Bird World

Bird World

Currently under reconstruction; to be transformed into the Tropical Forest exhibit and opened in the autumn 2008.

Have you ever experienced bird wings whirring in the air around you? Well, it is very easy to do so by entering Bird World. This unique building allows you to pass through savannah and tropical forest, always surrounded by variegated birds in all directions. Incidentally, a bird walking on the leaves of a water plant floating on the surface is no trick. It is all in a day's work for the wattled jacana.

In the smaller hall of Bird World, you can see birds in aviaries separated from each other by thin stainless steel wire. The hall features two habitats: the savannah, and tropical forest. The greater hall houses the tropical forest. Just step in and enjoy the company of hundreds of birds flying free from a number of tropical regions of the world. Do not forget to check out the dozens of rare bird species dwelling in the aviaries outside attached to the house.

A brief history

This unique exhibit was under development from October 1992, however, construction work was suspended one year later. This was not only due to a lack of funding, but a seeming lack of interest from the managers at that time, relating to a privatization plan for the zoo then under consideration. After the management had been replaced, work got underway again in October 1996, and was completed one year later. From that moment on, zoo personnel concentrated on the exhibit area, designed specifically to replicate the real habitats of the creatures. In early 1998, the first feathered inhabitants made their debut at Bird World, which was ceremonially opened on 13th March 1998.
